What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a therapeutic approach that combines elements of traditional talk therapy with the use of guided eye movements. Developed by Laney Rosenzweig, MS, LMFT, in 2008, ART is grounded in the principles of neuroscience and works by facilitating the processing of distressing memories, emotions, and physical sensations. The therapy aims to reframe and resolve traumatic experiences and negative thought patterns without the need for prolonged exposure to distressing content.
ART is unique in that it typically delivers results in just a few sessions, often providing significant relief from symptoms in as little as one to five sessions. This makes ART an ideal choice for individuals seeking quick, effective treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions.

How ART Works
ART leverages the natural processing abilities of the brain to help clients resolve troubling memories and symptoms associated with trauma and other mental health conditions. Here’s how it works:
Initial Assessment and Goal Setting:
- Your ART journey at Mentally STRONG begins with an initial consultation, where we discuss your concerns, symptoms, and therapeutic goals. This helps us tailor the ART sessions to your specific needs.
Guided Imagery and Visualization:
- During an ART session, you will be guided to visualize the distressing memory or issue while following the therapist’s hand movements with your eyes. This process is known as bilateral eye movement and is similar to the eye movements that occur during REM sleep, a stage of sleep associated with memory processing.
Voluntary Memory Replacement:
- As you focus on the distressing memory, ART enables you to voluntarily replace the negative imagery associated with the memory with positive or neutral imagery. This process is known as Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR) and helps reframe the memory in a way that reduces or eliminates its emotional impact.
Resolution and Closure:
- By the end of the session, the distressing memory is no longer associated with the intense emotions or physical sensations it once evoked. Clients often report feeling a sense of closure and relief, as if the memory has lost its power to cause distress.
